The Self Care Forum has been a great advocate of shared decision making and “making every contact count” – our fact sheets were designed especially for this. Now, NICE has produced a new guideline, and a standard framework, which covers how to make shared decision making part of everyday care in all healthcare settings. It promotes ways for healthcare professionals and people using services to work to make joint decisions about treatment and care.
This guideline includes recommendations on:
- embedding shared decision making at an organisational level
- putting shared decision making into practice
- patient decision aids
- communicating risks, benefits and consequences
